Jacob Andra and Stephen Karafiath coined the term “cognitive hive AI” (CHAI) to describe a new paradigm in enterprise AI implementation. They recognized the limitations of monolithic large language models in business settings, and began developing new modes of implementation.

The concept of CHAI emerged from Jacob attending a 2014 University of Utah lecture by Thomas Seeley, world-renowned bee expert, and learning about the algorithmic distributed intelligence of a beehive.
